If you subscribe to the FeedFront Magazine, there is an article in this months issue (April, 2011) from Morgan Linton about using exact match domains (EMDs) to rank quickly and easily. I’m a huge believer in that exact approach and about 250 of my 350 domains are EMDs. However, he and I have a difference of opinion about the value of .net and .org domains. He’s only a few hours away from me, so maybe on day we’ll get together to discuss domains when I’m in the LA area!

Morgan says, “the SEO benefit of an exact-match domain is the same regardless of TLD. This means that the owner of BuyCar.net has the exact same chance of ranking {as} well as the owner of BuyCar.com, based on the exact-match bonus, since Google and Bing will ignore the TLD.”

With Google’s autocorrect and automatically showing the suggested result, type-in traffic is a very tiny factor even for the biggest exact searches. Every domainer knows that developing a great domain is where the money lies.

As I said, Martin and I differ on our assumptions of the value of .net and .org TLD’s. I think Martin might be assuming that .com’s rank just as well without having actually tested it. I have evidence (partially anecdotal), and would be willing to prove what I already know as fact, especially if there were a compelling reason. Domains ending in .com rank better than .net and .org.

I just finished building 77 new exact match one-page sites. 61 of them are .com and the rest are .net and .org. A single domain is .info. The domains all went live about a week ago. Out of those 77 sites, 38 are on the front page for their exact match keyword. Out of those 38, 37 are .com. 1 domain on the first page is a .net domain. I haven’t done any link building, pinging, or anything like that.

If you’re new to domains and are trying to find some exact match domains, most of the good ones are taken, but you can still find some long tail domains that are unregistered. My favorite way to buy long tail domains is by using the Market Samurai Domains module. Just click Domains, then put in a list of keywords.

Exact match domains rank well! Exact match .com domains rank even better.

I have an old site (old by my terms, not in years) that I haven’t done much with other the last year. I post to it sporadically, but when people are looking for Internet Business Marketing Ideas for Small Businesses, they don’t find my site. Before today, my site was about business marketing ideas, but that has been a tough market, the market is flooded with sites, and a lot of good sites as well. As of today though I’m sticking to what I know, and putting a spin on the entire site.

It will no longer be about generic business marketing, but will focus on online marketing for businesses especially small businesses. Hopefully this will revive this site, and make it into a formidable competitor.

By the way, this is the same site that is suffering from supplemental issues still. Yes, I still do have too many websites, and I’m trying to redefine my focus toward sites that I know I can do well with. Also, sites that I can write easily for that play to my strengths, rather than sites I don’t know anything about.

Here is my dilemma, I have about 100 active websites. Most are small niche websites, about 85 of them have full sites, the other 15 or so are just domains right now.

13 of them are blogs.

1 is a forum.

71 are static html/php.

So what do I do? I can’t regularly update 13 blogs and could never update 71 static html sites with any kind of regularity. Here are how I see my options and the pros and cons of each choice:

1. Sell most of the sites and refocus on a small group of 2-5.

Pros: If I sell the sites, I won’t stress about trying to update them all of the time. I know if I try to update them all, I’ll fail. Selling would get that monkey off my back. With 2-5 sites, I could definitely write 2-4 posts for each site, every day.

Cons: Some of the sites are valuable as they stand, but most of them are just great targeted domains with huge potential in the future. Most of the domains are 2 years old max, some are really young. Selling now would negate all the time and energy I’ve put in so far.

2. Never update them.

Pros: I’m already doing this. No extra work. I could start this option immediately.

Cons: Won’t make me feel any better about letting the sites stagnate. I’ll still feel inclined to update them semi-regularly (monthly) which won’t help with anything, but makes me feel slightly better.

3. Hire 20 writers to write for all of the sites.

Pros: Sites will be updated.

Cons: Huge initial cost (investment) that I don’t know if I can justify. If I only pay to update 50 of the sites regularly (1 post per day) cost will become prohibitive. 50 sites X $5 per article X 30 days/month = $7500 per month! Not to mention all of the administrative work involved with running such a huge network. Also, paying $5 per article I’ll have a lot of turnover, if I pay more per post it will definitely get too expensive. I don’t know how much income I’ll be able to generate per site, and in the beginning I definitely won’t be breaking even. Most networks with 50 sites have at least a few people on the payroll included graphic designers and coders. I don’t know if I could handle it all.

What else can I do? I need either some votes for my current ideas, or some ideas I haven’t thought of. Leave a comment and let me know what you think.

When I not spending time with my family, I am usually working on my websites. Currently I have over 300 niche websites. Some receive nearly 100,000 unique visitors per month while others make an equal amount of money with just 2,000 visitors per month. I don’t stick with most projects for a long time so having a variety of website projects fits well with my personality.

I’ve been designing websites and marketing those websites since 1999. While much has changed, some things never will. Since 1999 my websites have provided value and knowledge to it’s visitors. In 2004 I started offering various services, you can read more about my services here.
