I am surprised there were no comments on this one when I found it from visiting another one of your related posts. For me, in the study of SEO .edu backlinks have become my favorite. This is mostly due to my admiration for .edu domains and the idea of trying to get one. Their ability to be bought and sold is somewhat like the snuff film. It is highly unlikely that they even exist for sale, but the idea of them being passed still makes for a great story. Obviously I am not trying to make light of the potential for a snuff film. However I do believe there is the same aura and mystic in acquiring a .edu domain and perhaps legal repercussions as well. Does anyone know about that?

For me, acquiring .edu backlinks even if they are not do follow is still so much more highly advantageous. Although we do not necessarily know how Google values them it is safe to say a .edu has incredible power over any other link just because of the inherit difficulty in acquiring them. It shows legitimacy. The same might be able to be said for .gov domains. However I have never seen a case for them.

I too hate comment spam, but there has to be a balance between building organic links to blogs and spammers who abuse this. It's fustrating when websites and blogs lose ranking just because others are abusing the system

I totally agree with your post. It takes just a few moments to read a blog and leave a decent comment. I don't know why spammers think that leaving in any old rubbish and keywords as theiir name will get a good number of accepted comments. I think it's better to leave a good comment and your real name. I can't tell you how many bingo and gambling comments that I've refused on my blog just because their name is their keywords!

Eric Here,

Yeah, hubpages.com is another great link, I'm pretty sure they are do follow but I see google loving these free blog pages as I have had articles show up in search engines in a 2 days and beat my other pages I was marketing like crazy for that 1st page position for the same keywords. Hub pages gets voted on by members but if you have a quality page, cool running.

So I recommend Hubpages.com for free link number 30!

Most of the information published though 4 years old is still useful. One thing has to be added is that duplicates and near duplicate content has to be avoided on websites with the now famous Panda update.

Hi Brandon,
I hope you read this comment, because I really want to thank you for this post. I have been reading my way through all the link-building material on the Warrior Forums, without finding such a comprehensive guide. I have to agree with you on Market Samurai - it is ace!

This article was posted in '07, and it's still true. The how-to is what I want to focus on, but I guess I'd better compile a list first.

Is it really that hard to get a guest post? You make it sound like it will be several weeks before they publish your stuff. Maybe it's because your amazingly written article will spark interest in their readers and they are afraid you will take their readers. So if you were to go the link building route you recomend buying someone else off to do it and even to go for several people? I love the plug for you, whatever gets business right?
